Notice you don't really own the domain names but can use them. If you have somthing serious it's always better to fork few bucks for that.

That's right. I remember signing up for co.cc domains but lost all of them when they suddenly stopped operating. You may end up wasting your time and effort building up those websites then one day lose them. There is value in a domain name.
