Read it again... one IP does not work as most of the domregs do not allow DNS change to nameservers that have one IP. That is the problem.

I know what you are saying, you could point your ns2 to another server (some people point it at one of google's IPs). We were thinking of providing something like this, just a generic notice page saying 'This server is undergoing maintenance' or something but we have too much of a work load already. So, your ns1 would point to your server and ns2 at ours.  This way if your server goes down, your user's would at least get some sort of notification rather than 'server not found'.

Something worth looking into.

TGates idea is quite easy to realize. Vps with dnsmasq, assign all hostnames to the vps ip and set ns2 to that vps. Done!
