Centos 7 is shipping with MariaDB equivalent to 5.5 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We don't have any supported OS with MySQL 4.1. Not sure what you are talking about? 5.1 may be?

Nope the best way is to compile it. IF you use alternative repos be carefull as you end up with some bad deadlock and a lot of issues with package manager.
